How to calculate GST manually
To add 5% GST to a price, multiply the price before tax by 1.05:
GST amount = Price before GST × 0.05
Price including GST = Price before GST × 1.05
For example, on a $200 purchase:
- GST: $200 × 5% = $10.00
- Price including GST: $200 + $10.00 = $210.00
How to calculate reverse GST
To find the original price when GST is already included, divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.05:
Price before GST = Price including GST ÷ 1.05
To calculate only the GST included in the total:
GST amount = Price including GST × 5 ÷ 105
For example, if the GST-inclusive price is $210:
- Price before GST: $210 ÷ 1.05 = $200.00
- GST included in the total: $210 × 5 ÷ 105 = $10.00
