How to calculate GST in Alberta
Alberta applies 5% GST and does not charge a provincial sales tax. To calculate GST on a price before tax, multiply the price by 5%.
GST amount = price before GST × 0.05
To calculate the total price including GST, multiply the original price by 1.05.
Price including GST = price before GST × 1.05
For example, if an item costs $100 before tax:
- Price before GST: $100
- GST at 5%: $5
- Price including GST: $105
How to calculate reverse GST in Alberta
To determine the original price from a GST-inclusive total, divide the total by 1.05.
Price before GST = price including GST ÷ 1.05
For example, if the total price is $105, the original price is $100 and the included GST is $5. You can also enter the GST-inclusive amount into the calculator above to calculate both values automatically.
Why does Alberta have only GST?
GST is a federal tax, so the 5% GST applies in Alberta as it does throughout Canada. Alberta does not impose a general provincial sales tax, which means most taxable purchases are subject only to GST.
The absence of a provincial sales tax is a policy choice made by the Alberta government. The province raises revenue through other taxes and sources rather than adding a broad sales tax like PST or combining it with GST as HST. Resource revenue has contributed to Alberta’s finances, but it is not the only source of provincial revenue.
As a result, Alberta has the lowest total sales tax rate among Canadian provinces. A taxable purchase costing $100 is normally $105 after GST in Alberta, compared with a higher total in provinces that also charge PST, QST or HST.
