Use this Québec sales tax calculator to add GST and QST to a price or calculate the taxes included in a tax-inclusive total.

Enter a value in any field—price before tax, GST amount, QST amount or price after tax—and the other values will be calculated automatically. The calculator assumes that both the standard 5% GST and 9.975% Québec QST apply.

Rates last checked: August 15, 2026. The standard rates are 5% GST and 9.975% Québec QST, for a combined rate of 14.975% when both taxes apply.

How to calculate GST and QST in Québec

When a purchase is subject to both standard taxes, calculate the 5% GST and 9.975% QST separately from the price before tax.

GST amount = Price before tax × 0.05

QST amount = Price before tax × 0.09975

Price including GST and QST = Price before tax × 1.14975

For example, on a $200 purchase:

  • GST: $200 × 5% = $10.00
  • QST: $200 × 9.975% = $19.95
  • Total price: $200 + $10.00 + $19.95 = $229.95

GST and QST are both calculated from the original price. QST is not calculated on the GST amount, and GST is not calculated on the QST amount.

How to calculate reverse GST and QST in Québec

To find the price before tax when both GST and QST are included in the total, divide the tax-inclusive price by 1.14975:

Price before tax = Price including tax ÷ 1.14975

For example:

$229.95 ÷ 1.14975 = $200.00

The total tax is $29.95, consisting of $10.00 GST and $19.95 QST. You can also enter the tax-inclusive amount in the calculator above to calculate the original price and each tax amount automatically.

Why does Québec use QST?

QST stands for Québec Sales Tax. It is Québec’s provincial sales tax and is administered by Revenu Québec. Unlike provinces that use HST, Québec charges the 5% federal GST and 9.975% QST as two separate taxes.

Revenu Québec also administers the federal GST in Québec under an agreement with the Government of Canada. Businesses in Québec therefore generally deal with Revenu Québec for both GST and QST registration, returns and payments.

Why is the QST rate 9.975%?

The unusual 9.975% rate results from a change to the way QST was calculated.

Before January 1, 2013, the QST rate was 9.5%, but QST was calculated on the selling price including GST. For example, a $100 purchase first became $105 after the 5% GST, and the 9.5% QST calculated on $105 was $9.975.

On January 1, 2013, Québec stopped calculating QST on the GST-inclusive amount. To keep the amount of QST payable unchanged, the rate was adjusted from 9.5% to 9.975%.

Today, GST and QST are calculated separately on the price before tax:

  • GST: 5%
  • QST: 9.975%
  • Combined tax rate: 14.975%
