How to calculate GST in the Northwest Territories

To add 5% GST to a price, multiply the price before tax by 1.05:

Price including GST = Price before GST × 1.05

For example, on a $200 purchase:

  • GST: $200 × 5% = $10.00
  • Price including GST: $200 + $10.00 = $210.00

How to calculate reverse GST

To find the original price when GST is already included, divide the GST-inclusive price by 1.05:

Price before GST = Price including GST ÷ 1.05

For example:

$210 ÷ 1.05 = $200

The GST included in the total is $10. You can also enter the GST-inclusive amount in the calculator above to calculate the original price and GST automatically.

Why is there no territorial sales tax in the Northwest Territories?

The Northwest Territories does not levy its own general sales tax. Purchases are therefore generally subject only to the federal 5% GST, unlike provinces that also charge PST, QST or HST.

The federal government introduced GST in 1991. Since the Northwest Territories did not add a separate territorial sales tax, its standard sales tax rate has followed the federal GST rate. The GST decreased from 7% to 6% in 2006 and then to its current 5% rate in 2008.
