How to calculate GST and PST in Saskatchewan
When a purchase is subject to both standard taxes, calculate 5% GST and 6% Saskatchewan PST from the price before tax.
GST amount = price before tax × 0.05
PST amount = price before tax × 0.06
Price including GST and PST = price before tax × 1.11
For example, if an item costs $100 before tax:
- Price before tax: $100
- GST at 5%: $5
- Saskatchewan PST at 6%: $6
- Total price after tax: $111
GST and PST are calculated separately from the original price. GST is not charged on top of PST, and PST is not charged on top of GST. The combined 11% rate applies only when the purchase is subject to both taxes.
How to calculate reverse GST and PST in Saskatchewan
To calculate the original price from a total that includes both 5% GST and 6% PST, divide the tax-inclusive total by 1.11.
Price before tax = price including GST and PST ÷ 1.11
For example, if the total is $111, the original price is $100. The total tax is $11, consisting of $5 GST and $6 PST.
Enter the price after tax into the calculator above to calculate the original price and both tax amounts automatically.
GST and PST history in Saskatchewan
Saskatchewan has retained its own Provincial Sales Tax rather than combining it with the federal GST. When the federal GST was introduced in 1991, Saskatchewan continued administering its provincial tax separately and did not join the HST system later adopted by several other provinces. As a result, Saskatchewan purchases commonly show two tax lines: 5% federal GST and 6% Saskatchewan PST. Keeping the taxes separate allows the province to maintain its own PST rate, exemptions and rules about which goods and services are taxable.
